The incident, attributed by security analysts to the North Korean group TraderTraitor, forced Binance to scramble to secure its platform. While users expressed alarm over the scale of the theft, comparing the situation to the collapse of Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX, Musk fueled the tension by posting dismissive emojis under threads discussing the breach. Zhao, noting that Binance holds a $1 billion stake in Musk’s X, publicly requested support rather than derision during the crisis.
Binance has since pivoted to recovery efforts, announcing that it reserved over $6.34 billion to indemnify affected users. The exchange confirmed it is purchasing necessary assets through market and OTC channels to restore accounts. Despite the public friction with Musk, leadership remains focused on coordinating with law enforcement and blockchain intelligence firms to track the stolen funds and stabilize the platform’s operations.
