The shift marks a departure from Reddit’s long-standing identity as the open front page of the internet. In its third-quarter earnings report, the company confirmed that search referral traffic cratered throughout the quarter, with the trend accelerating into October. Management noted that the drop-off most severely impacts logged-out visitors, effectively breaking the cycle of casual discovery that previously fueled site growth.
CEO Steve Huffman framed the move as a necessary evolution in the relationship between search engines and content publishers. By prioritizing direct traffic over search-reliant newcomers, Reddit aims to insulate its ecosystem from the volatility of Google’s search algorithms. While the company has not provided a firm date for the transition, testing is scheduled to begin in international markets before the end of the year.
