Binance co-CEO Richard Tang confirmed the staggering losses, which included substantial holdings in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins like USDC and USDT. While initial reports suggested a simple credential theft, Tang clarified that the intrusion involved a complex process rather than a single unauthorized action. The attacker leveraged access to a service container to execute illicit withdrawal transactions, though investigators have found no evidence that the company's private keys were compromised.
Investigations continue as the exchange identifies additional points of breach beyond the initial laptop. To mitigate the fallout, Binance has successfully coordinated with asset issuers to freeze approximately $3 billion of the stolen capital. Founder Changpeng 'CZ' Zhao emphasized the company's resilience, citing the $1 billion Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and significant corporate equity holdings as a buffer against the loss. The exchange has pledged to release a comprehensive technical post-mortem and an updated Proof of Reserves once the investigation concludes.
