The scheme begins in community forums and missing pet groups. Once a thief identifies a target, they use AI tools to create convincing photos of the animal. Posing as a Good Samaritan, the scammer contacts the owner, claiming to have found the pet. The emotional state of the victim becomes the primary tool for the grift, as owners are often willing to bypass standard caution to secure a reunion.
As the planned meetup approaches, the scammer pivots, reneging on the physical exchange and demanding payment via digital gift cards. These transactions are favored for their irreversibility. When owners hesitate, the tactic shifts from deception to coercion. Some scammers escalate to demanding thousands of dollars via wire transfer, frequently resorting to threats against the animal’s life to pressure the victim into compliance. Security experts emphasize that any request for payment via gift cards from an unverified source is a hallmark of fraud, regardless of the emotional urgency presented.
