Honda executive warns of industry collapse over potential Canada tariffs

A potential 50% tariff on Canadian automotive imports threatens to trigger a catastrophic industry-wide disruption, according to Jennifer Thomas, senior vice president of corporate affairs at American Honda Motor Co. The warning follows Donald Trump’s threat to double existing duties by January 1 unless a new trade agreement is finalized.

Honda executive warns of industry collapse over potential Canada tariffs

Speaking at a Reuters automotive conference in Detroit, Thomas emphasized that the sector relies on a stable, trilateral framework akin to the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Industry leaders are pushing for a comprehensive regional accord rather than bilateral arrangements, noting that the current uncertainty over cross-border parts movement undermines long-term competitiveness. Honda, the second-largest vehicle producer in Canada, maintains that the integrated nature of North American manufacturing makes such steep tariffs economically damaging.

While the administration previously moved to place the USMCA under an annual review process, recent reports of renewed trade talks regarding materials like aluminum provide a glimmer of hope. Despite the pressure, Thomas remains cautiously optimistic that a resolution can be reached. She pointedly noted that current trade dynamics risk putting North American producers at a disadvantage compared to regions like Japan or South Korea, which currently face lower tariff rates of 15% on vehicle exports to the United States.
