Disney mulls free streaming tier as Super Bowl ad inventory sells out

Disney is weighing the launch of a free, ad-supported streaming service to capture price-sensitive viewers, signaling a shift in its digital strategy. CEO Josh D'Amaro confirmed the company is exploring the model to broaden its audience while simultaneously reporting a complete sell-out of high-value advertising slots for the upcoming Super Bowl.

The proposed service would aim to funnel new users into the broader Disney+ ecosystem. By targeting consumers who avoid subscription fees, Disney intends to leverage its deep library to differentiate itself from competitors like Tubi or Pluto TV. D'Amaro noted that the company possesses significant untapped ad inventory, which could provide a distinct advantage in accelerating revenue growth compared to rivals already operating in the free, ad-supported space.

This push into free content coincides with continued dominance in the live sports market. Disney confirmed that all available advertising spots for the February Super Bowl—broadcast across ABC and ESPN—have been secured. With 30-second spots reportedly fetching $9 million, the event remains the most lucrative platform in live television, underscoring the enduring demand for premium, high-impact advertising despite a cooling broader market.
