General Motors developing proprietary AI for deeper vehicle control

General Motors intends to roll out a native artificial intelligence assistant later this year, designed to surpass the limitations of general-purpose models. By merging conversational AI with proprietary OnStar data and internal vehicle telemetry, the automaker aims to move beyond the capabilities offered by its current Google Gemini integration.

Anna Santos, GM’s director of product management for voice and AI, stated that the new system will offer a level of vehicle awareness current third-party solutions cannot match. While the Google-powered Gemini assistant handles natural language queries and basic cabin controls like temperature and audio, it operates as a top-level interface. The upcoming proprietary tool is being built to handle predictive maintenance and complex, multi-layered commands.

The automaker is collaborating with an unnamed large language model provider to refine this technology, focusing on features such as a "kids setting" that automatically adjusts seating, climate, and security locks. Santos noted that this internal project represents a shift toward leveraging data unique to GM to simplify everyday ownership, ensuring the assistant understands both the mechanical state of the car and the specific habits of the driver.
