Contrary to fears that digital natives would abandon theaters for streaming services, Generation Z is emerging as the most reliable force at the box office. Data from 2025 reveals that this demographic, spanning ages 14 to 29, now attends more theatrical screenings annually than their older counterparts among Gen X and baby boomers.
In 2025, Gen Z moviegoers averaged seven theater visits, matching the frequency of millennials while outpacing the six-film average recorded by older generations. According to Comscore, this group accounted for nearly 40% of all North American ticket sales, effectively dismantling the assumption that younger consumers prefer to remain at home.Industry experts attribute this shift to a genuine desire for social, out-of-home experiences. Jason Dorsey of The Center for Generational Kinetics notes that the misconception regarding Gen Z's sedentary habits ignores their actual behavioral patterns. As this cohort solidifies its influence, major exhibitors are adjusting their strategies. AMC, for instance, has observed a consistent year-over-year increase in Gen Z attendance. Senior vice president of marketing Carrie Trotter identified the demographic as a cornerstone of future theatrical viability, suggesting they are poised to become the industry's most vital audience segment.
