How a Michigan couple reached Coast FIRE and doubled their wealth

After hitting a $550,000 investment milestone in 2021, Andy and Nicole Hill stopped all retirement contributions to embrace "Coast FIRE." By shifting their focus from aggressive saving to long-term market growth, the couple watched their portfolio climb toward $1 million without adding a single cent of new capital.

The Hills reached this point by front-loading their investments into low-cost index funds for over a decade. By 2020, they had determined that their existing balance, assuming a 6% annual return, would naturally compound to roughly $2 million by the time they reached traditional retirement age. This realization allowed them to stop chasing early retirement through extreme austerity and instead prioritize their current quality of life.

Andy Hill, 44, transitioned away from a stressful corporate marketing career to run his own business, "Marriage, Kids and Money." He now limits his work to 20-25 hours per week. While the strategy relies heavily on the performance of the broader U.S. stock market, the couple remains unfazed by periodic downturns. When their balance dipped during the 2022 market volatility, they resisted the urge to tinker with their holdings, choosing to hold steady instead.

Rather than diversifying into real estate or alternative assets, which they deemed too time-consuming, the Hills maintain a simple portfolio spread across traditional retirement accounts, Roth IRAs, HSAs, and taxable brokerage accounts. By focusing on passive index-fund investing, they have successfully traded the anxiety of constant saving for the stability of a compounding, hands-off portfolio.
