The new pricing structure creates a tiered system based on timing and travel demand. During non-peak periods, the cost for a first checked bag rises to $50 if purchased over 24 hours before flight departure, climbing to $60 for last-minute payments. During peak travel windows—including summer and holiday rushes—those figures increase to $55 and $70 respectively. These adjustments do not apply to elite frequent flyers or holders of the airline’s co-branded credit cards.
JetBlue attributed the move to the need to offset soaring operating expenses, specifically fuel. The price of jet fuel has roughly doubled since February, reaching $4.44 per gallon in the U.S. Gulf Coast region according to the Energy Information Administration. As fuel remains the industry's second-largest expense after labor, other major carriers are expected to mirror these fee hikes, a pattern observed throughout the current fiscal year.
