The scale of the incoming layoffs involves several thousand employees, according to internal sources. This effort follows targeted reductions earlier this year, including approximately 1,000 marketing roles in April and 300 positions across human resources and technology in September. By the close of its 2025 fiscal year, Disney employed roughly 231,000 people, making these maneuvers a significant shift in corporate operations.
CEO Josh D’Amaro and CFO Hugh Johnston signaled this trajectory in an August letter to shareholders, noting they are mid-stream in an enterprise-wide cost-reduction initiative. Chief People Officer Sonia Coleman confirmed that involuntary staff cuts have already commenced and will persist into next year, alongside an early retirement program. The company faces a broader industry trend of retrenchment; Netflix recently announced a 6% workforce reduction, and Skydance is pursuing $6 billion in synergies following its merger. Investors will look for further clarity on these financial targets when the company reports its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings on November 17.
