OpenAI Merges ChatGPT Tabs to Unify Workflow

OpenAI is collapsing the divide between casual conversation and complex labor within ChatGPT. By merging the Chat and Work tabs into a single interface, the company aims to create a seamless transition from initial brainstorming to project execution, allowing users to handle research and document creation alongside everyday queries.

The transition, confirmed via user communications, signals a shift toward a more centralized AI assistant model. While the desktop app’s dedicated Codex environment for coding will remain distinct, the new unified experience allows for direct integration of files and plugins during the creative process. OpenAI suggests this consolidation enables users to move from exploring an idea to having the model execute it without switching contexts.

Alongside the interface redesign, the company is refining how it manages subscriber limits. Starting in December, Plus, Pro, and Business plans will shift to a shared usage allowance measured in tokens across both ChatGPT and Codex. While more resource-intensive tasks will consume this budget faster, the company noted that Instant chat will remain exempt from these constraints. Users can monitor their remaining token allowance and reset cycles directly through the settings menu, providing more transparency as the platform pushes users toward heavier, project-based workflows.
