The $23 billion firm has aggressively recruited to fill the gaps left by early-day departures, adding 15 new portfolio managers in 2026 alone. Key hires include former Point72 traders Prejesh Patel and Pierre-Anthony Bodin, alongside 25-year JPMorgan veteran Wentao Mu. Kevin McDonald, previously a deputy COO at Balyasny, has also joined as co-COO to bolster the unit's leadership under Colin Lancaster and Mitesh Parikh. Francesco Cafagna remains the only original portfolio manager still at the firm.
Despite the churn, the macro unit now manages nearly 20% of the firm's total capital across 45 trading pods. Performance metrics suggest this strategy is paying off: the group has achieved a Sharpe ratio exceeding 3, significantly outpacing the 1.5 threshold typically viewed as excellent for multistrategy funds. This growth trajectory follows a near-merger with Millennium in 2023, with the macro team acting as a primary engine for a firm-wide resurgence that saw a 20% gain in 2024. While competitors like Rokos Capital maintain smaller investment teams, Schonfeld continues to prioritize scale and operational structure over individual tenure.
