The uncovered software architecture suggests a system where users could attach messages to payments, mirroring the functionality found on platforms like Venmo. Transactions would be managed through TikTok Pay, an in-app infrastructure currently restricted to Southeast Asian markets like Malaysia and Vietnam. Despite these findings, a company spokesperson stated the feature is not currently undergoing active testing.
Precedent for such services exists within the ByteDance ecosystem. The Chinese version of the app, Douyin, already supports internal peer-to-peer transfers via its own payment gateway. Furthermore, the company has signaled broader financial ambitions elsewhere, including recent applications to Brazil's central bank for lending and prepaid account licenses. Whether these tools move beyond internal development remains uncertain, yet they signal a clear interest in consolidating financial activity within the app's interface.
