Jennifer Daniel, chair of the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee, shared the designs via her newsletter, confirming the rollout for early 2026. The list includes a lighthouse, an eraser, a net with handle, a meteor, a monarch butterfly, a pickle, and both leftwards and rightwards thumb signs. While some additions like the lighthouse seem long overdue, others are designed to address visual confusion within the current set. For instance, the new monarch butterfly will offer a distinct orange-and-black contrast to the existing blue morpho butterfly, while the flaming appearance of the meteor will differentiate it from the blue streak of the current comet emoji.
The standout addition is the Cracked Smiling Face, which replaces an earlier proposal for a smiley face with squinting eyes. Initially developed to capture a specific sentiment, it is already being positioned as a quintessential icon for modern digital fatigue. Meanwhile, the inclusion of the pickle is expected to gain traction in casual messaging, joining the ranks of other food-based icons often repurposed in suggestive contexts.
