The updates introduce a "clear screen" mode, allowing users to strip away UI overlays for an unobstructed view of content, mirroring a feature introduced by TikTok in 2022. Navigation also shifts with the arrival of a heart-shaped icon for likes, officially replacing the traditional thumbs-up button. In a notable departure, YouTube has removed the dislike button from the primary Shorts interface, citing user confusion over how to distinguish between content that is simply unappealing and content that violates community guidelines.
Functionality improvements extend to playback controls as well. Users can now access a 2x speed setting by pressing and holding the screen, or lock the accelerated pace via a swipe gesture. A dedicated mute button has also been added to the pause menu, providing a more immediate way to silence clips. According to the company, these adjustments stem from internal experiments designed to make the platform feel more intuitive, ensuring that viewer feedback remains specific despite the removal of negative ranking tools. While the thumbs-down option is gone, users retain the ability to report videos or block channels through the three-dot menu.
