The layoffs target specific teams within the service and customer support departments. This restructuring follows a pattern of recent downsizing, including the departure of over 600 employees last October. Rivian ended the previous year with 15,232 staff members across North America and Europe, yet the company continues to grapple with deep financial losses.

Last year alone, the automaker reported a $3.6 billion deficit while delivering 42,247 vehicles. Financial filings indicate that in the first quarter of this year, the company lost approximately $6,000 for every vehicle delivered. The R2 SUV represents a pivot from luxury niche manufacturing toward a mainstream consumer base, a strategy intended to mirror the market dominance of Tesla. However, the path to profitability remains precarious as the industry faces the loss of the $7,500 federal tax credit for EV purchases under shifting regulatory conditions.
