While the devices are marketed as free, the mechanics rely on 24 consecutive monthly bill credits. Customers finance the device through their monthly statement, where an offsetting credit reduces the net cost to zero. This structure locks the user into a two-year commitment with the network. Canceling service or migrating to another carrier before the 24-month term expires triggers an immediate demand for the remaining unpaid balance.
