The complaint describes a pattern of exploitation targeting vulnerable populations already straining under elevated costs for food and fuel. According to investigators, the company ignored tens of thousands of consumer complaints regarding price discrepancies, failing to implement basic safeguards to rectify the systemic errors. Christopher Mufarrige, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, stated that the retailer betrayed consumer trust by extracting millions of dollars through these unlawful overcharges.

The legal action involves a broad coalition of states, including California, Florida, Illinois, and Texas, among others. Following the announcement, Dollar General shares fell approximately 4%. The company has yet to provide a response regarding the allegations or its internal pricing policies.
