Google updates Android to link your phone number across all accounts

Between August and October 2025, Google quietly shifted its Android policy to automatically verify and associate your phone number with every account signed into your device. This change forces users to actively opt out of a system that links all current and future accounts to a single mobile identity.

The updated "Verify phone numbers automatically" setting functions by default, creating a unified digital footprint across your Google ecosystem. While this integration streamlines account recovery and enables faster sign-ins or emergency location services, the background verification process carries a hidden cost: periodic re-verification attempts may trigger unexpected carrier charges for some users.

Beyond convenience, the move bolsters Google’s advertising infrastructure. By tethering multiple accounts to one number, the company refines its ability to serve targeted advertisements across your various devices and profiles. If you prefer to keep your accounts siloed, you can disable the feature by navigating to Settings, selecting Google, and heading to the Privacy & Security menu to toggle off "Verify phone numbers automatically."
