Testing Birdbuddy’s AI Against an Exotic Alexandrine Parakeet

When Haley Henschel set up a Birdbuddy Home smart feeder, she posed a specific challenge to the device’s AI: identifying Melon, her Alexandrine parakeet. While Birdbuddy claims its model recognizes nearly 11,000 species, this rare, chatty parrot native to Asia proved to be a difficult subject for the technology.

Testing Birdbuddy’s AI Against an Exotic Alexandrine Parakeet

The Alexandrine parakeet is frequently mistaken for its more famous cousin, the Indian ringneck. They share a similar green plumage, but the Alexandrine is distinguished by a larger beak, a longer tail, and a distinct crimson wing patch that acts as a diagnostic marker for bird enthusiasts. Given that these parrots are not standard backyard visitors, the test served as a stress test for the AI’s capability to distinguish between subtle taxonomic variations.

Upon capturing footage of Melon, the Birdbuddy app misidentified the bird as a rose-ringed parakeet, the common name for an Indian ringneck. Despite the error, the device successfully captured the footage, allowing the user to submit feedback to refine the model. While the AI struggled with this exotic specimen, the device remains marketed toward identifying common native species, with the company’s new Home and Nook models now available for purchase.
