Qantas to Open Bookings for 18-Hour New York to Sydney Nonstop

The carrier is positioning these ultra-long-haul routes to meet growing consumer demand for direct travel, bypassing the inconvenience of airport connections. CEO Vanessa Hudson noted that the success of the 17-hour Perth to London service proves passengers are willing to pay a premium for such convenience. To accommodate the extreme duration, Qantas will utilize Airbus A350-1000 ULR aircraft, modified with extra fuel tanks and a four-class cabin configuration including first, business, premium economy, and standard economy.

While the New York to Sydney flight will be among the world's longest, it follows the debut of the London to Sydney route scheduled for next year, which is expected to reach 20 hours. In preparation, Qantas has partnered with sleep scientists to mitigate passenger fatigue. These measures include specialized cabin lighting schemes designed to help travelers adjust to destination time zones, a departure from the business-only model currently employed by competitors like Singapore Airlines on their own long-haul routes.
