The S4 features a 4.3-inch E Ink touchscreen with a 220 ppi resolution, echoing the design language of the earlier X4 model. While the internal specifications remain modest with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, the hardware introduces a long-awaited front light with adjustable color temperatures. The switch to a standard USB-C port also replaces the proprietary pogo pin connectors found on previous iterations, simplifying the charging experience for daily users.
Previously, Xteink devices were hampered by a reliance on DRM-free EPUB files, which alienated those with established libraries on Kindle or Kobo. The move to an open operating system changes this dynamic entirely, enabling the installation of third-party apps and seamless progress syncing via Wi-Fi. Despite the functional upgrade, the device is currently restricted to the Chinese market, where it is available for preorder at approximately $50. The company has yet to confirm a timeline for a broader international release.
