On the upcoming Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, launching September 18, the double-click gesture now triggers Live Rewind. This hardware-exclusive feature transcribes the previous 15 seconds of ambient audio, a move that prioritizes the new tool over the previously intuitive app-switching function. Owners of older Apple Watch models face a different outcome: the same double-click action now forces the device to open the app grid, completely removing the ability to quickly jump between active programs.
Apple has provided no toggle in the settings menu to revert this change, leaving users across the board without a way to restore the shortcut. For those using legacy hardware, the loss of the switcher is particularly jarring, as they gain no benefit from the Live Rewind functionality that replaced it. The new models are currently available for preorder, with the Series 12 starting at $399 and the Ultra 4 priced at $779.99.
