Dimon’s assessment follows mounting concern over the proliferation of leveraged exchange-traded funds, though he clarified that these products are merely a symptom of a much wider issue. During a recent interview, he highlighted that margin debt has reached unprecedented levels, noting that significant portions of this leverage remain outside traditional reporting classifications.
This friction is already manifesting in global markets. In South Korea, regulators recently tightened oversight on single-stock leveraged ETFs following a sharp decline in the Kospi index, which dropped nearly one-third from its June peak. The fallout hit major tech players hard, with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix shares tumbling 6% and 9% respectively. Parallel to these regulatory shifts, the collapse of the AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness served as a stark case study in risk. After suffering a 67% loss in July, the firm was forced to liquidate its equity portfolio to satisfy margin calls from Citadel, illustrating how quickly highly leveraged positions can unravel under pressure.
