Chipotle Shares Slide After Jalapeno Recall

Chipotle Mexican Grill shares tumbled more than 5% on Tuesday following the company’s decision to pull jalapenos from its Minnesota restaurants. The move, prompted by a potential link to a salmonella outbreak within the supply chain, revived investor fears regarding the chain’s history of food safety crises.

Spokesperson Laurie Schalow stated that the company utilized its traceability system to identify a specific lot of peppers tied to the outbreak. These products were promptly removed and replaced with supplies from alternative growers. While the company maintains that this is a proactive measure, the market response highlights lingering sensitivity surrounding the brand. Between 2015 and 2018, Chipotle faced multiple foodborne illness outbreaks, forcing a massive overhaul of its internal training and safety protocols.

Public anxiety remains elevated as a broader cyclospora outbreak continues to spread, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting over 6,700 confirmed cases and two recent deaths in Michigan. Although Chipotle confirmed its supply chain is not involved in the cyclospora incident, the company noted that broader consumer concerns about foodborne illness dampened sales during the latter half of July.
