PGA Tour Overhauls Competition with New Two-Track System

PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp has unveiled a sweeping structural overhaul for professional golf, set to launch in 2028. The plan replaces the current tour schedule with a two-tiered system of premier and qualifying circuits, aiming to prioritize meritocracy and simplify the competitive landscape for fans and players alike.

The new model splits the circuit into the PGA Tour Championship Series and the PGA Tour Challenger Series. This structure mimics the promotion and relegation systems found in professional soccer, creating a clearer pathway for athletes to reach elite events. The Future Competition Committee proposed these changes, which received board approval this week ahead of the Travelers Championship in Connecticut.

Rolapp, who joined the organization in June 2025 following a long tenure at the NFL, will also succeed Jay Monahan as commissioner at the end of this year. He emphasized that the shift seeks to ensure consistency when top players compete, effectively raising stakes for the entire field. Wyndham Clark, fresh off his victory at the US Open, supported the move, noting that the two-track system will make the tour easier to follow while reinforcing a merit-based path to competition.
