Meta Whistleblower Silenced by Legal Order at Hay Festival

Sarah Wynn-Williams sat in total silence at the Hay Festival last weekend, physically present on stage but legally barred from speaking about her memoir. The former Meta employee, currently facing a $50,000 fine per breach of a non-disparagement order, became a living symbol of corporate censorship during a panel discussion.

The panel, titled "Power of Tech," was intended to feature Wynn-Williams alongside Columbia Law School professor Tim Wu and journalist Carole Cadwalladr. Instead, the event transformed into a stark demonstration of Meta's reach. To ensure the author could participate without violating an emergency court order, festival organizers removed her book, "Careless People," from sale during the event. Cadwalladr and Wu filled the void, using their time to condemn the tech giant’s tactics, which Wu compared to the behavior of despotic regimes.

Wynn-Williams’ book, which details her time at the company between 2011 and 2017, alleges that Meta executives ignored internal warnings regarding disinformation. Meta has consistently dismissed these claims as outdated and false, securing a court order shortly after the book's March 2025 release. Legal representatives for the company had explicitly warned the Hay Festival that her presence at the event could trigger further penalties. Despite the gag order, the campaign against the author has inadvertently fueled interest in her work, driving the memoir to the top of Amazon and New York Times bestseller lists and earning her the Freedom to Publish prize at the British Book Awards.
