Airbnb’s new checkout rules spark host revolt

Conflict has erupted between Airbnb and its hosts following a policy shift that bans most guest checkout chores. Starting November 20, the platform will prohibit requirements like stripping beds or taking out trash, prompting some owners to threaten strikes and petition for a reversal of the mandate.

The new policy mandates that any remaining checkout requests must be disclosed clearly before booking, effectively limiting hosts to tasks that do not require professional-grade cleaning. While travelers have long complained about paying high service fees only to face a laundry list of chores, many hosts view the change as an overreach that undermines their property management. A Change.org petition, which has gathered over 11,000 signatures, argues that tasks like washing dishes are basic responsibilities of renting a home, not professional cleaning duties.

Opposition has manifested in heated Reddit threads and Facebook groups, where some hosts are calling for collective action, including temporary delistings to pressure the company. Ryan Robbins, a host in Searsport, Maine, noted that the restriction prevents owners from managing their properties according to their own standards. Conversely, a vocal segment of the host community supports the move, arguing that the hospitality sector should prioritize guest comfort over administrative burdens. These proponents maintain that professionalizing the experience is necessary for the platform's survival, noting that most considerate guests tidy up regardless of house rules.
