The streaming giant is navigating a delicate balance. While Sarandos insists the business model remains sound, the company is testing a 49-day exclusive theatrical window for high-profile projects like Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician's Nephew. Analysts at Wedbush suggest these releases function as a marketing engine rather than a cannibalization of the platform, potentially smoothing over strained relationships with Hollywood talent.
Internal upheaval accompanies this strategic pivot. The company has brought in former Disney executive Peter Rice as chief content officer to replace 10-year veteran Bela Bajaria. This leadership shuffle coincides with the departure of film head Dan Lin and a broader reduction of roughly 1,000 staff members, including key creative executives like Doug Belgrad and Sheroum Kim. Despite these exits, Sarandos maintains that the company does not require a fundamental strategic overhaul, only sharper execution to turn its recent string of modest successes into the massive hits required to reinvigorate growth.
