The Wikimedia Foundation confirmed that the disruption stemmed from newly discovered security vulnerabilities within PHP, the programming language powering its projects. To mitigate potential risks, the organization proactively shuttered several supporting systems while implementing emergency maintenance. While the foundation noted that these vulnerabilities affect all current PHP versions, they emphasized that the issue extends beyond their own servers to any system relying on the language.
Simultaneously, the Internet Archive—home to the Wayback Machine—reported its own connection failures. Users attempting to access the site were met with timeout errors, a situation the organization acknowledged via social media. Although both platforms experienced outages around 10 a.m. ET according to DownDetector, officials have not yet confirmed whether the incidents share a common technical root or if the timing is purely coincidental.
