Elon Musk Reflects on DOGE Tenure and Proximity to Power

President Donald Trump established the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) shortly after his inauguration to target federal overspending. Under Musk’s direction, the department triggered significant disruption, including the closure of the U.S. international aid agency and the termination of over 280,000 federal employees. Reflecting on his time in the capital during an appearance on The Builders podcast, Musk acknowledged the allure of the experience, noting that witnessing momentous decisions firsthand proved difficult to resist.

Despite initial claims that DOGE would slash $2 trillion in spending, the initiative struggled to produce verifiable results, eventually adjusting its goal to $150 billion. Musk’s public-facing role—marked by controversial moments like brandishing a chainsaw at a conference and performing a Nazi salute—eventually strained his relationship with the administration. Tensions reached a breaking point last May following a public dispute over a tax bill that Musk argued would exacerbate the deficit. Musk departed the project shortly thereafter, well ahead of its scheduled July 2026 conclusion. By November 2025, the initiative had quietly dissolved, leaving Musk to conclude that solving the national debt from within the government is impossible without the intervention of AI and robotics.
