The new verification process mandates that users complete a scan within seven days of receiving a notification. To bypass the check, both the primary account holder and the family member must be in the same physical location, as the QR code refreshes every few seconds to prevent remote workarounds like screenshot sharing. If a user fails to verify their status within the week-long window, they are barred from joining any other Family or Duo plan for a 12-month period, leaving the $12.99 monthly Premium Individual subscription as their only alternative.
This move reinforces Spotify’s "living under one roof" requirement, a rule that has existed since 2019 but was previously enforced with less scrutiny. While the company has not disclosed how broadly these checks are being deployed, the policy creates a significant hurdle for legitimate household members who happen to be traveling or temporarily living apart. In the U.S., the financial incentive to maintain the ruse is high: a Premium Family plan costs $21.99 for six accounts, reducing individual costs to roughly $3.67 per month—nearly a quarter of the price of an individual subscription.
