Rice assumes responsibility for the company’s entire global content slate, encompassing scripted series, unscripted programming, film production, and live events. His background includes high-level tenures at 21st Century Fox and Fox Searchlight Pictures, where he oversaw the release of critically acclaimed films such as Slumdog Millionaire and Juno. He replaces Bajaria, who steered the creative direction of major hits including Stranger Things, Squid Game, and Beef, while spearheading the platform's recent expansion into live sports and events like The Roast of Tom Brady.
The appointment coincides with internal instability. Netflix recently eliminated roughly 1,000 positions, amounting to 6% of its global staff. This reduction mirrors the scale of the company’s 2022 layoffs, which occurred during its first quarterly subscriber decline in over a decade. Brian Pitz, managing director at BMO Capital Markets, noted that these cuts represent a fundamental shift in the company’s cost structure rather than a localized reaction to short-term subscriber fluctuations.
