Meta Ray-Ban glasses caught recording without user activation

Users of Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses have reported the devices capturing audio and generating transcripts of private conversations without the required voice activation prompts. The unauthorized recordings occurred even when settings intended to prevent such background data collection were disabled, according to multiple accounts shared on social media.

The reported glitch appears widespread rather than isolated to a single device. One Reddit user documented the issue across three separate pairs of glasses, spanning both second and third-generation models. During these incidents, the devices’ integrated white LED indicator—designed to signal when the camera or microphone is active—illuminated during conversations despite no "Hey Meta" command being issued.

Meta confirmed the existence of the issue in a statement to Android Authority, claiming the problem is now resolved. A company spokesperson directed users to existing settings menus to review and delete voice logs, though Meta declined to explain the technical root cause of the unauthorized recording. This incident follows earlier scrutiny regarding Meta’s data practices, including an investigation that revealed recorded video clips were being sent to third-party contractors in Kenya for AI training, a process that reportedly included intimate or sensitive footage.
