Southwest Airlines Replaces Loyalty Tiers with New Status System

Southwest Airlines is retiring its two-tier A-List loyalty program, replacing it with a three-level structure of Silver, Gold, and Platinum status starting January 1. The move signals a departure from the carrier’s long-standing quirky identity as it shifts toward a model designed to capture higher spending from frequent travelers.

The overhaul follows a broader strategic pivot that recently saw the airline abandon its signature open seating policy and implement new fees. Tony Roach, the carrier’s chief customer and brand officer, noted that the previous branding had become disconnected from the airline's operational reality, particularly as boarding groups no longer align with status tiers. The update serves to harmonize the Rapid Rewards program with the company's new cabin configurations and revenue-focused service model.

Under the new requirements, existing A-List members will move to Silver, while A-List Preferred members transition to Gold. The new Platinum tier targets the airline's most active customers, requiring 140,000 Tier Qualifying Points or 100 qualifying flights. While Silver status now demands 25 flights instead of 20, the carrier is increasing the points-earning bonus for those members to 40%. Conversely, the Gold tier sees its points threshold lowered to 65,000, though the associated earnings bonus on qualifying flights will adjust to 60%. Passengers can continue to accrue status through Chase co-branded credit card spending, which grants one point per dollar spent.
