The shift simplifies the loyalty program by removing the dual-path system that previously allowed members to qualify through a combination of 15 flight segments and 5,000 points. Under the new rules, all status levels will be determined solely by spending on base fares, upgrades, award travel, and United Chase credit card activity. While thresholds for Premier Silver, Gold, and Platinum tiers remain unchanged, the 4,000-point increase for Premier 1K represents a significant hurdle for the airline's most frequent flyers.
United maintains that the flight-segment metric had become an outdated relic, opting instead for a single, consistent measurement of customer engagement. Despite the removal of segment-based qualification, members must still complete at least four flights on United or United Express aircraft each year to remain eligible for any status. To cushion the impact for existing loyalists, the airline introduced a loyalty head start: cardholders will automatically receive 5% of the points required to reach their previous year's status level at the start of each new qualification cycle. This adjustment follows a series of recent program overhauls, including reduced earning potential for basic economy tickets and higher qualification requirements implemented for the 2025 cycle.
