Google Unveils Fitbit Edge with Replaceable Battery and Onboard GPS

After launching the minimalist Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch 5 earlier this year, Google is expanding its wearable lineup with the Fitbit Edge. Arriving ahead of an October 27 launch, the new tracker balances advanced fitness metrics with a larger display, aiming to bridge the gap between basic bands and full-featured smartwatches.

Google Unveils Fitbit Edge with Replaceable Battery and Onboard GPS

The Fitbit Edge arrives with a 1.34-inch AMOLED display, marking the largest and brightest screen ever integrated into a Fitbit device. Despite the hardware upgrade, the unit maintains a slim 11.58 mm profile and weighs just 17.7 grams. A significant shift for the series is the introduction of a user-replaceable battery, which promises up to seven days of life on a 90-minute charge. For quick top-ups, a five-minute stint on the charger provides an additional day of functionality.

Functionally, the Edge addresses key omissions from the earlier Fitbit Air. It includes a built-in altimeter for elevation tracking and standalone GPS, allowing users to monitor runs and rides without tethering to a smartphone. The device holds an IP68 waterproof rating, ensuring durability during swims or inclement weather. Users also gain access to the Google Health Coach and three months of Google Health Premium. Available now for preorder at $179.99, the device also arrives in a $219.99 Stephen Curry special edition featuring a custom basketball-themed watch face and a unique Rye colorway.
