Sony Offloads Hundreds of VR Patents to Meta

The timing of this sale, occurring roughly three and a half years after the introduction of the PlayStation VR 2, indicates that Sony may be deprioritizing its immersive hardware roadmap. While the PSVR2 has not been officially discontinued, the device has suffered from persistent stock shortages and a notable lack of sustained software support since its 2023 debut. Despite critical praise for its hardware engineering, the platform currently occupies a precarious position in the gaming landscape.

For Meta, the acquisition serves as a bolster for its own hardware division. The company recently navigated internal turbulence, including the layoff of over 1,000 employees within its Reality Labs unit and the closure of its Horizon Worlds VR app. However, the purchase suggests that Mark Zuckerberg remains committed to the medium, particularly as the firm pivots toward new product categories like standalone VR glasses. This transaction effectively transfers a substantial portion of Sony's intellectual property to a competitor that is doubling down on its long-term metaverse ambitions.
