United Airlines Launches Aggressive Poaching Campaign for Elite Flyers

Under the new program, travelers holding elite status on either Delta or American receive a 90-day trial of equivalent status at United. To retain that standing through January 31, 2028, participants must complete specific flight requirements and meet spending thresholds on United mainline or regional services within the initial three-month window. Requirements scale based on the tier: matching into the lower levels necessitates $1,500 in spending, while securing United’s 1K status—the top tier before invitation-only levels—requires an outlay of $7,000.

Henry Harteveldt, founder of the consulting firm Atmosphere Research Group, characterizes the strategy as a rare and blatant escalation in industry competition. While airlines frequently offer status matches, United’s explicit focus on its two largest rivals via social media marks a shift toward more aggressive marketing tactics. This campaign arrives as carriers increasingly leverage premium seating, expanded lounge networks, and new international routes to capture the high-spending segment of the market.
