General Motors Sales Slip as EV Demand Stalls

General Motors sold 670,974 new vehicles in the third quarter, a 5.5% decline from last year. The drop is largely driven by a sharp contraction in all-electric vehicle demand, a reversal from the record-setting volume the automaker enjoyed during the same period in 2023.

General Motors Sales Slip as EV Demand Stalls

The cooling interest in electric models hit GM’s core lineup hard. Sales for the Equinox EV plummeted 92.4%, while the Blazer EV and Hummer EV saw respective drops of 84.4% and 72.9%. These figures highlight a stark shift in consumer appetite compared to last year, when buyers rushed to secure federal incentives before policy adjustments. With gas prices hovering at a national average of $4.41, the market is pivoting toward hybrids—a segment where GM remains notably thin, offering only the Corvette.

Despite the broader slump, the company found pockets of growth among its more affordable internal combustion models. The Silverado Trailblazer saw a 51% surge, while the Buick Envista and Chevrolet Trax posted gains of 18.4% and 16.3%, respectively. This performance in the low-cost sector provides a cushion as higher-end brands like Cadillac struggle, with year-to-date sales across all GM brands currently down. Duncan Aldred, president of GM North America, dismissed the quarterly dip as a temporary hurdle, pointing to upcoming V-8 engine launches and manufacturing investments as the foundation for future growth.
