Luxury travelers abandon summer for the quiet of fall

September is no longer a quiet shoulder month for the travel industry. The luxury travel network Virtuoso reports that sales for fall experiences have jumped 69%, with September emerging as a new peak month characterized by a 77% increase in revenue. This trend toward so-called fallcations sees travelers moving their itineraries deeper into October and November, which have recorded sales gains of 54% and 71% respectively.

According to Misty Belles, vice president at Virtuoso, the shift is most pronounced among high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals. For these groups, the traditional summer window has lost its luster as they prioritize privacy and exclusivity. While the transition has been building for years, industry analysts note that the movement toward autumn accelerated rapidly throughout 2025 and 2026, effectively redefining the seasonal calendar for premium travel.
