NFL Targets Global Expansion with First Melbourne Matchup

The 2026 schedule marks a significant shift in strategy, with inaugural games slated for Melbourne, Rio de Janeiro, and Paris. These locations join a rotation that already includes London, Madrid, Munich, and Mexico City. NFL owners have already greenlit 10 international games for 2027, reaching the current limit permitted under the collective bargaining agreement between the league and its players.

Commissioner Roger Goodell is pushing for this expansion to bridge a stark viewership gap. While domestic ratings remain dominant—last year’s Week 1 game in Brazil drew 18.5 million U.S. viewers compared to 1.2 million internationally—the league is betting on long-term growth. Goodell has expressed a desire to host as many as 16 international games annually and recently stated he is confident an NFL team will eventually establish a permanent base outside the United States.
