The trouble began in the late morning, with Downdetector reports for Outlook spiking from a baseline to over 6,000 in a matter of minutes. While initial reports centered on missing emails and login failures, the scope of the disruption quickly widened. Microsoft confirmed that an internal change to its authentication components caused parts of the infrastructure to reject credentials, effectively locking users out of their core productivity suites.

By late evening, the company reported that mail flow had begun a gradual recovery. However, the restoration process remains uneven. Engineers are still working to stabilize search functionality and clear massive backlogs of queued messages that accumulated during the downtime. The company noted that some infrastructure sections are not accepting re-applied authentication components as expected, leading to lingering performance issues for dependent services.

Throughout the day, the outage triggered a wave of frustration among enterprise customers who rely on the platform for daily operations. While Microsoft’s status page initially suggested limited impact, the reality on the ground—reflected in flooded Reddit threads and social media reports—pointed to a near-total blackout for many organizations. Microsoft has instructed administrators to monitor incident logs EX1464935 and MO1465074 for ongoing updates as they work to expedite a full return to normal operations.
