The tech giant confirmed that it updated its platforms to align with the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). Under this policy, the label displayed depends on the user's location: those within the United States see the new "Lake America" designation, while Canadian users retain the traditional "Lake Ontario" name. For the rest of the world, Google displays both names to avoid geographical confusion.
This is not the first time the company has mirrored presidential proclamations on its maps. Last year, a similar executive order renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America," a change Google also integrated into its search and mapping services. The company maintains that its policy is to reflect the official naming conventions provided by national government databases, regardless of the political climate surrounding those decisions.
