The companies have engaged in discussions over recent weeks, though a final agreement remains elusive. According to sources familiar with the matter, the talks could still collapse. Neither Nvidia nor Hugging Face has commented on the proceedings. This potential acquisition follows a previous refusal by Hugging Face to accept a $500 million investment from Nvidia late last year, as the startup aimed to avoid influence from a single dominant investor.
Nvidia’s interest is driven by its massive cash reserves, which include $47.9 billion in existing private company investments and an additional $18 billion committed for the current fiscal year. Microsoft reportedly held similar discussions with Hugging Face, but those talks have since ceased. Hugging Face currently serves as the central hub for open-source AI, hosting millions of models that run on hardware from Nvidia’s competitors, including AMD and Intel. Integrating the platform into Nvidia’s ecosystem would likely accelerate demand for its chips, yet it threatens the very neutrality that has made the site a cornerstone for the global developer community.
