Uber adds live video streaming for teen accounts

Once a teen account trip begins, the linked adult receives a push notification to access the feed. Both the driver and the passenger are alerted when the stream is active, and the connection terminates automatically when the ride ends. Uber’s director of product management, Ashu Manohar, described the update as a move to bolster family safety alongside existing tools like PIN verification and audio recording. While the stream is live for parents during the trip, the footage becomes inaccessible to users afterward. Uber retains the encrypted video, noting it will only be reviewed if a safety incident is officially reported.

The rollout began in select U.S. regions this week, with nationwide availability expected in the coming weeks. The move arrives as Uber faces ongoing scrutiny regarding passenger safety. A New York Times investigation previously highlighted reports of sexual misconduct linked to the platform, and the company has dealt with legal challenges, including a Phoenix court ruling that found Uber partially liable for violence committed by a driver. In response to such concerns, the company has updated its background check policies to cover 99 years of a driver's history, moving away from a previous seven-year window.
