Amazon drone delivery ends in a backyard hot tub

An 11-second viral video captured in Richmond, Texas, shows an Amazon Prime Air drone hovering over a residential backyard before miscalculating its drop. Instead of a soft landing on the lawn, the delivery bay opened mid-air, plunging the package directly into the murky water of an in-ground hot tub.

The footage, credited to Lindsey Austen, features the distinct mechanical drone hum interrupted by the shock of onlookers as the parcel hits the water. This delivery mishap occurs as the retail giant pushes to expand its automated drone service to over 500 cities nationwide, including hubs like Chicago and Atlanta.

Amazon spokesperson Lindsay Hamilton addressed the incident, labeling such occurrences as extremely rare. While the company’s official FAQ remains silent on the protocol for aquatic delivery failures, Hamilton emphasized that the A-to-z Guarantee remains in effect, promising refunds or replacements for customers whose orders do not arrive as intended. The company maintains that it uses these rare malfunctions as learning opportunities to refine its navigation technology for future flights.
