Twitch Automates AI Training Using Creator Content by Default

The controversy centers on a toggle titled "Training for Generative AI," which permits Amazon to ingest channel data to improve its underlying machine learning models. Twitch’s FAQ clarifies that this could involve using creator audio to enhance captioning systems not just for the streaming platform, but across the entire Amazon ecosystem. When questioned about the decision to opt users in automatically, Twitch Chief Product Officer Mike Minton offered a candid explanation during a recent livestream. According to Minton, the company opted for a default-on approach because, if left to the users, nobody would volunteer for the program.

To disable this feature, users must navigate to their account settings, select the Security and Privacy tab, and manually toggle off the training option. Twitch maintains that opting out will not interfere with the functionality of existing AI-supported features, such as current safety tools or automated captions. Despite the assurance, the move underscores the growing friction between platform owners and creators over the use of user-generated content in corporate AI development.
