Training for a marathon requires more than just endurance; it demands reliable data on pace, recovery, and heart rate. My testing included the Whoop MG, Garmin Forerunner 570, Apple Watch Ultra 3, Suunto Run, Pixel Watch 4, Oura Ring 4, and Fitbit Charge 6. While each device excels in specific niches, most fall short when pushed to the limit of a 26.2-mile race.
The Garmin Forerunner 570 stands out as the premier tool for performance metrics, offering deep insights into running dynamics, though its physical design can be abrasive over long periods. For those prioritizing recovery, the Whoop MG and Oura Ring 4 lead the pack by providing actionable health data without the distraction of a screen. However, these are wellness tools, not race-day partners.
When it comes to the marathon itself, battery life is the ultimate arbiter. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 proved the most resilient, successfully navigating the full course while maintaining its utility for navigation and communication. Conversely, the Pixel Watch 4 and previous iterations of the Apple Watch SE faltered under the demands of a full race day. Ultimately, for a dedicated runner, the ideal setup involves pairing a specialized sports watch like the Garmin or Suunto with a recovery-focused tracker like the Whoop for off-course insights.
